Community Supported Herbalism
Adapting and Boosting Immunity
Prepared by Amber Friedman
It’s the 5th basket of the 2018/2019 Community Supported Herbalism Basket Program. It’s hard to believe that this is the last basket of this program. I want to thank you from the depths of my heart for being part of this journey with me! It has been a pleasure to provide you with amazing medicine and herbal information to support you in your well-being. This final basket is a mix of herbs to help you adapt, boost immunity and fight off those bugs going around.
Cold + Flu Support seems like a remedy everyone is in need of right now. The main star in this formula is elecampane a balsamy root used to treat respiratory issues. It helps relieve bronchial spasms, fights infections and moves and clear congestion. Helps sluggish digestion. Take a dropperful 3 times a day, smaller doses for children. It is in combination with Astragalus, an adaptogen that strengthens a weak immune system and prevents infection. It supports the cardiovascular system, liver, and kidneys.
Manifest Candle is a soy-based candle that is made with essential oils to help uplift your mind, body, and soul. Candles can do lots of magical things, like clear and purify the air from unwanted energy. They can also help us keep warm, which we really need at this cold part of the winter. I created this candle for you to use with one of your intentions. I would suggest thinking of something in life you would really like to have or be, and then light your candle and set your intention any way that feels comfortable to you. You can ask your candle to help you to receive this item, a way of being, feeling or whatever it is you would like to manifest at this time. When you light the candle in the future you know that it is helping you reach that goal. Intention setting is a conscious vibration that we are all capable of. Remember, you are powerful – you control your destiny!
Miracle Grains a long time favorite of the famous herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. A mix of herbs, clay, almonds, and oatmeal. This is a luxurious face wash that would love to be followed up with some face oil or face lotion to keep your skin moisturized and smooth. The roses and lavender help to tone your skin and strengthen your nervous system. Clay helps to detox your skin and also makes it very soft and smooth. I would pour a small amount into my hand and add a bit of water and rub it over my face and scrub it in a bit if you like, then wash off with a warm face cloth.
Adapt Tea is a combination of Tulsi, Licorice, Hibiscus, Raspberry Leaves, and Peppermint. Both Tulsi (Holy Basil) and Licorice are adaptogen herbs. Adaptogen herbs help your body adapt to stress. There is a wide variety of adaptogen herbs and they range from stimulating to relaxing. They all have the following properties; non-toxic and safe, beneficial effects on a range of body systems, help to regulate hormones, they affect the stress response and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis of the nervous-endocrine system. Tulsi can be seen as a great protector it helps fend off colds, and other infections, strengthen digestion and decrease inflammation. On an emotional level, it helps us feel less hopeless and more in tune with the world around us. Licorice is very soothing, it helps heal gut issues, sore throats, coughs, and respiratory issues. It also helps with adrenal exhaustion and can fight off herpes and clear skin rashes and eczema.
